On Wednesday, July 27, 2011 the Warren County Sheriff’s Department was notified of a human skull located in the woods near a creek in the southwestern part of Lincoln County close to the Warren County Line. Detectives from Warren County responded to conduct a search of the area. They were unable to locate any remains other than the human skull.
On Friday July 29, 2011, Warren County Detectives contacted the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office after discovering the Skull was believed to be located in Lincoln County. Warren County Detectives sent the skull to the St. Louis Medical Examiner’s Office where a forensic odontology was completed. These records were compared to missing person’s reports in the area.
On Monday, December 20, 2010, 25-year-old Nicholas Michael Coppola was reported by his parents as a missing person. The report was filed with the Foristell Police Department. His parents stated they had not heard from Coppola for ten days. The Foristell Police Department conducted a thorough investigation; however, their investigation went cold when all possible leads were exhausted.
On Friday, August 26, 2011, dental records from Coppola were compared to those of the skull. It was confirmed the skull was that of Nicholas Coppola; however there is no information indicating foul play.
At this time the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is working with the Foristell Police Department as well as the Warren County Sheriff’s Office to compile all the investigative material in the Coppola case.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a thorough investigation in an attempt to locate additional evidence in order to determine a cause of death.
